HEALTH NEWS More money for Virginia's children's health 1-19-2009 At least 55,000 children in Virginia can't afford to go to the doctor because they don't have health insurance. But the new version of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, bill will allow more kids to be insured. This week, Congressman Tom Perriello voted in favor of the bipartisan bill. The new version will provide government funded healthcare for 11 million kids nationwide. These are children of working families whose income is at or below $42,000 a year. "Economically, it means we are encouraging people to move off of Medicaid roles and into the workforce, and I think that's an important signal," said Perriello. On Friday, a woman whose son is now insured joined Perriello in Martinsville to tell her story. "I don't have to make choices or decide if I can take him to the doctor, or the hospital, or not because of financial reasons. That's a big issue when you have to decide," said Carol Grant. Congress plans on funding the program through the cigarette sales tax. |
